Who is the city for? How to create a space that cares for us (2025)
Imagine a city where you feel good. A city that does not exclude and cares for you. Here, you don't have to check the air pollution level every morning or run across the crosswalk because the green light lasts too short. The wheels of the stroller you are pushing do not get stuck in cracks, and when you get tired, you can sit on a bench hidden in the shade of greenery.
Magdalena Milert (@pieing) proves that everyday life can be like this. As an architect and urban planner with many years of experience, she analyzes the problems of Polish cities and presents solutions that can heal our space. She presents the latest research, her own observations, and innovations that have changed the lives of residents of Barcelona, Washington, and São Paulo for the better in an accessible way.
Milert proposes a vision of a city that cares for all its residents—not only those who are strong, able-bodied, and vocal about their needs, but also those for whom the current solutions make it difficult, and sometimes even impossible, to participate in community life. Our cities don't have to be inaccessible, overheated, and expensive—it's time to think about how to recreate them. So that everyone feels welcome in them.
This book will take you through a whole spectrum of emotions: from anger at exclusion to a sense of motivation to implement change. Together, we can create cities that people want to live in.
Bookarest bookstore invites you to a meeting with the author
Bucharest is the people who create it. A place born out of a passion for art, architecture, design, and literature. In 2004, it was named the most designer bookstore in Europe by Elle Decoration. Bookarest is a Third Place (according to Ray Oldenburg) where you can find good literature, drink delicious coffee, and simply relax. As part of ARCHI-STRADA, the Bookarest bookstore will have its own stand and relaxation zone, located in pavilion 5 at the Poznań International Fair. Throughout the fair, books on architecture and design will be available for purchase at the stand. Come and visit us!
